Royal Armouries
Elephant Armour Display
'Please Don't Touch!" is often the visual and audible instruction at museums and galleries, and this was particularly true of a unique and valuable set of Indian elephant armour on display at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
However, people are people, and many couldn't resist touching the intricately created armour as well as the 'dummy' elephant carrying it, causing tarnishing and discolouration to the metal and fabric.
Rather than hide the armour away or put it behind glass, The Royal Armouries asked FdK to design and produce an associated display, on which would be accurate replicas of sections of the armour and tusks, which visitors are encouraged to touch.
Providing access for children and wheelchair visitors was important, as was ensuring that text was in multiple languages including braille.
