North Downs Way Start Marker
The North Downs Way is a way marked footpath that starts in Farnham and runs 153 miles along the North Downs to Dover.
A collaboration between the Rights of Way departments in the county councils that the Way passes through has resulted in the improvement of the marking of the route and better information and orientation signage.
Surrey County Council asked FdK to design, produce and install a marker for the start of the Way on the A31 as it bypasses Farnham, to replace the original, single wooden finger post that was looking a bit lost and tired.
We developed a proposal for a sculptural sign that would be clearly visible to both walkers and passing motorists, as well as acting as a backdrop for group photos and selfies for those starting out on the trail.
The final item was fabricated in Corten steel (as used for the Angel of the North) which rusts to a mellow orange/brown, with the trail title and text made from stainless steel.
The cut shapes represent walking figures and the wildlife of the route, that form and disappear as travellers pass the site.
