Farnham Castle
Information and orientation graphics
Farnham Castle is an ancient site that houses both the remains of a medieval castle and a palace of the bishops of Winchester. The castle had been managed by English Heritage for many years and the palace buildings housed a company that provided cultural training for companies and individuals who were due to live and work abroad.
With English Heritage wanting to relinquish responsibility for the castle, and a growing list of maintenance required for the bishop's palace buildings, a Heritage Lottery grant was applied for and secured.
One of the conditions of receiving grant funding was that the buildings would be opened to the public at various times during the year and that information and orientation materials would be made available to enhance these openings.
FdK were asked to design a guide book, printed resources and orientation and information signage for use throughout the site.
Our experience of working with the National Trust for many years gave us a very good foundation for the development of a graphic language and style and included the commissioning of a series of historical illustrations to help explain the history of the buildings.
